When is the best time to plant trees in Oklahoma?

Every year we get a call in late July asking about doing a landscaping service that involves planting trees in the yard. It isn’t as though we couldn’t do it, the problem is that usually (and especially this year) it’s a very hot time of the year. I always advise those potential clients to do a different type of landscape because they are at risk of losing trees if they are planted during late July or early August because of the harsh weather. Losing trees can sometimes be very costly depending on the types of trees desired or planned for in the landscaping design.

Ideally, you should plant trees in Oklahoma in late February or early March. Sometimes this can be considered too early because you still can have snow and freezes after this time of the year. In fact, we had snow a couple of years ago in central Oklahoma all the way into April. However, it is best to plant the trees during their dormancy prior to the time that the trees begin to bloom. Generally blooming of trees can start as early as mid-March.

The issue you are going to have almost any time of the year is the harsh weather conditions of Oklahoma. Although we do have four distinct seasons, from week to week it can go from very hot to very cold in a short period of time. Whether you plant too early or too late based on how the weather is doing that year, make plans to protect your new trees. If it is very hot with very little rain, intend on watering daily during the evenings or early morning hours. If it is cold outside and there is a deep freeze, plan on placing hay around the base of your tree in order to keep the roots as protected as possible.

Also, wind is often an issue for young trees in the State of Oklahoma. If you have very young trees, intend on using lines to keep your trees upright and in position. Wind damage to trees can often end up in an eye sore for a yard rather than something pleasing to look at.
